Bhubaneswar, May 8: At least five Maoist militants, including 3 women combatants, were killed in an encounter with security forces on Wednesday. The gunbattle was reported in Odisha's Koraput district, close to the Andhra Pradesh border. No casualties were incurred by the security personnel in the encounter.

Koraput superintendent of police Kanwar Vishal Singh, while speaking to reporters, confirmed the elimination of five Maoists in the operation carried out by the forces earlier today. The counter-naxal operation comes days after the Maoists killed 15 C-60 commandos in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli. The attack was carried out on May 1, when the state celebrated Maharashtra Day.

Last month, an attack carried out by the Left-Wing Extremists (LWE) in Maoist bastion of bastar left 6 dead, including the BJP MLA from Dantewada, Bhima Mandavi.
