Punjab: Sarpanch’s Husband Shot Dead in Tarn Taran After Heated Exchange
A 35-year-old man was shot dead late Friday night following a verbal confrontation in Tarn Taran district, Punjab. The victim, Navpreet Singh Navi, was the husband of Gaggobua village Shiromani Akali Dal sarpanch Kulwinder Kaur. Police have launched a manhunt for the prime suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the incident.
A 35-year-old man was shot dead in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district late Friday night following a heated confrontation with another man, police said on Saturday. The deceased, identified as Navpreet Singh alias Navi, was allegedly shot by Surinder Singh alias Sonu Kanda, who fled the scene after the firing. Police suspect that an old rivalry between the two men may have led to the incident, TOI reported.
Heated Exchange Preceded Shooting
According to Tarn Taran Superintendent of Police (Detective) Riputapan Singh, Navpreet and Surinder had a heated exchange before Surinder allegedly opened fire with a rifle. Navpreet sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police said the preliminary investigation points to an old rivalry between the two men as a possible reason behind the confrontation. However, investigators are still working to establish the exact sequence of events.
Victim Was Husband of Village Sarpanch
Navpreet was the husband of Kulwinder Kaur, the Shiromani Akali Dal sarpanch of Gaggobua village in Tarn Taran. The shooting reportedly created tension in the village. Accused Absconding, Search Underway
Surinder Singh allegedly fled after the shooting and remained absconding as of Saturday afternoon. Police teams were conducting searches to locate and arrest him.
Police were also examining the crime scene and collecting evidence, including information about the weapon allegedly used in the shooting. Investigators were questioning potential witnesses and people who may have information about the history of the dispute.
FIR and Postmortem
Police were in the process of registering an FIR, while Navpreet’s body was taken into custody and sent for postmortem examination. The investigation is ongoing, and police said further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting would emerge as the probe progresses.
