A portion of the roof at Ratnagiri railway station collapsed during heavy rainfall on Sunday night as relentless monsoon showers continued to batter Maharashtra. No casualties were reported, and officials said a major tragedy was averted because there was minimal movement in the affected area at the time of the incident due to adverse weather conditions.
Visuals from the station showed nearly a 50-foot section of the roof lying on the floor in the outer area of the railway station. Roof Collapse Raises Construction Quality Concerns
Questions are now being raised over alleged substandard construction since the station was renovated only two years ago. The renovation work was carried out by an agency engaged by the Public Works Department.
The latest incident has also brought renewed attention to a roof leakage reported at the station last year, which had triggered widespread public criticism over the quality of the renovation work. Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Closed After Landslide Near Tunnel 2, Traffic Diverted.
Major Tragedy Averted
Authorities said no one was injured in the collapse. A major tragedy was avoided because the affected portion of the station had very little public movement at the time, with heavy rainfall keeping commuters away from the area. Officials are expected to inspect the damaged structure and determine the cause of the collapse.
Monsoon Continues to Disrupt Maharashtra
The roof collapse comes as heavy monsoon rainfall continues to affect large parts of Maharashtra.
Flooding, structural collapses and landslides have been reported across Mumbai, the Konkan region, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha, disrupting transport and daily life.

Heavy rain has also disrupted transport across the state. Local train delays have affected Mumbai's suburban railway network, while landslides have disrupted rail and road connectivity on the Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Goa corridors. Authorities continue restoration work at multiple locations as rain-related disruptions persist.
