A nearly 20-foot-deep and around 1.5-metre-wide well was found beneath the rubble of an alleged illegal mosque at the Saharanpur collectorate premises in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, September 6, officials said. The well was discovered while debris from the structure was being cleared, a day after the mosque was demolished in a bulldozer operation that continued for nearly 16 hours.

According to the administration, the mosque had been constructed over the well. The discovery has raised questions about when the well was built and whether it existed before the mosque was constructed. The well came to light on Sunday morning as workers were clearing the debris from the demolition site, PTI reported. According to officials, a slab was spotted during the debris-removal process. After the slab was cut with a cutter, the well was found underneath it.

The discovery has led to questions about the origin and history of the well. Officials are seeking to establish who constructed it and when it was built. Another question being examined is whether an existing well had been covered before the mosque was constructed over the site.

SDM Says Probe Will Determine Next Action

Saharanpur Sadar SDM Subodh Kumar, who visited the spot, told ABP News in an exclusive conversation that the mosque had been built over the well. However, he said there is currently no information about who constructed the well or when it was built.

The SDM said the entire matter would be investigated and that further action would be taken by the administration based on the facts that emerge from the probe.

Technical Teams To Examine Site

SDM Sadar Subodh Kumar stated that technical teams and concerned agencies will investigate to determine the scale and provide further details. The examination is expected to focus on the structure of the well and its relationship to the demolished building.

Officials have not yet disclosed any findings that establish when the well was constructed or how long it had existed beneath the structure. The well's discovery comes amid an ongoing dispute over the structure located on the Saharanpur collectorate premises. For now, the administration has secured the site and is awaiting the findings of the investigation. Further action will be based on the facts and evidence gathered by the concerned agencies, officials said.
