A court in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, October 16, sentenced Ravita Kashyap and her lover Amardeep to death for murdering her husband, Amit Kashyap, and attempting to pass off the killing as a snakebite. The sentencing follows the court’s October 7 verdict, in which both were convicted of the murder.

The case came to light in April 2025, when Amit was found dead at his home in Akbarpur Sadat village in Meerut district. A live snake was found trapped beneath his body, initially leading his family to suspect that he had died of a snakebite. Postmortem Report Revealed Cause of Amit Kashyap’s Death

The postmortem examination established that Amit had died of asphyxia, rather than a snakebite. The report indicated that pressure had been applied to his neck, mouth and nose, prompting investigators to pursue the case as murder. According to the prosecution, Ravita and Amardeep strangled Amit and placed the snake near his body to make the death appear accidental. The prosecution alleged that the murder was planned after Amit became aware of their relationship.

Forensic Evidence, Witness Testimony Led to Conviction

Investigators examined forensic findings, mobile phone records and witness statements during the investigation. The prosecution also presented the testimony of a snake charmer who said Amardeep had purchased a snake for Rs 1,000. The court examined testimony from 12 witnesses during the trial. Amit’s brother and mother were among the key witnesses, while the postmortem findings helped establish that his death was caused by suffocation. The court convicted Ravita and Amardeep on October 7 and pronounced the death sentence on October 16. The latest development marks the sentencing stage of the case, which began with the discovery of Amit’s body in April 2025.
