The enforcement action comes after the deceased student's family alleged that the headmistress verbally abused and subjected the girl to casteist slurs during a school admission interview. The victim, who wished to pursue nursing after discontinuing studies at her previous school, visited the Government Model Secondary School in Usilampatti on August 24 accompanied by her mother. When the teenager noticed her mother standing with folded hands in a submissive posture, she gently gestured for her to relax her arms. The headmistress allegedly took offense at the gesture, accused the student of showing arrogance, and used casteist remarks, asking why "people like you" could not keep their hands folded before instructing them to leave the premises. Deeply distressed by the public reprimand and humiliation, the teenager went home, spent the night without eating, and died by hanging on August 25. Madurai police initially registered an unnatural death case on August 25. Following protests by relatives demanding action against the school official, investigators altered the FIR on August 28 under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to invoke charges of abetment of suicide. Police officials confirmed that authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the school campus. Law enforcement agencies are also collaborating with the Education Department and the District Child Welfare Committee to decide whether additional charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act will be added to the case.
