Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and widespread waterlogging across parts of Gujarat, with Valsad district's Umargam (Umbergaon) taluka emerging as the worst-affected area after recording more than 1,100 mm of rain in just 16 hours. The extreme rainfall has led to the evacuation of thousands of residents, disruption of transport services and large-scale rescue operations across south Gujarat.
A video from Valsad's Vapi showing several cars submerged in floodwater has surfaced online, highlighting the impact of the intense downpour. The footage shows a building's parking area completely flooded, with water levels reaching vehicle windows and surrounding areas also under water.

Umargam Records Extreme Rainfall
According to State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) data, Umbergaon received over 1,100 mm rainfall between 6 am on Wednesday and 10 am on Thursday.
Several other parts of Valsad district also witnessed intense rainfall, with many talukas recording more than 600 mm during the same period. The heavy rains triggered flooding in low-lying areas, forcing residents to move to safer locations.
Over 1,200 People Rescued as Teams Deployed
Around 1,200 people have been rescued from affected areas, while hundreds more have been shifted to safer places, officials said. One rain-related death was reported in Tapi district. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Air Force and Coast Guard were placed on alert.
Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana said disaster management teams were being increased as rainfall intensity continued. “So far, 1,200 people have been rescued, and 1,500 residents in Surat moved to safe locations. In Navsari district, 200 people stranded across 11 villages due to rise in the water level of the Kaveri river have been rescued and relocated to safety,” said the IAS officer.
Red Alerts Continue Across South Gujarat
A red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall remained in place for Valsad, Navsari, Surat and Tapi districts. Makwana said rescue operations were being conducted in coordination with district administrations, police personnel and local volunteers.
“The Air Force and Coast Guard are also on alert and people will be airlifted if necessary, once weather conditions improve,” he told reporters. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in multiple affected districts, including Valsad, Surat and Navsari, while teams remain on standby in Amreli, Junagadh and Bhavnagar.
The heavy rainfall has affected normal life across several parts of Gujarat. More than 300 roads were temporarily closed, over 200 state-run bus trips were affected, and power outages were reported in several areas, according to the Relief Commissioner.
In Surat, fire department personnel used boats to rescue residents from waterlogged areas. Around 40 people from the Pandesara area were shifted to safer locations.
Several residential societies and underpasses in Ahmedabad were also affected after heavy rainfall on Thursday morning. Train services between Gujarat and Mumbai were disrupted after rising water levels along railway routes in south Gujarat. Western Railway opened a help desk for passengers following cancellations and short-terminations.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the State Emergency Operation Centre in Gandhinagar and reviewed the rainfall situation, particularly in south Gujarat.
He spoke with officials from Valsad, Surat and Navsari districts and directed authorities to move residents from low-lying and waterlogged areas to safer places.
The Chief Minister also spoke with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured the state government of all necessary assistance for rescue and relief operations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red rain alert for Valsad, Navsari, Dangs, Surat and Tapi districts for Thursday and Friday. Additional alerts have also been issued for other parts of Gujarat, including Panchmahal, Dahod and Mahisagar districts.
According to SEOC data, south Gujarat has already received over 62% of its average seasonal rainfall, while the state as a whole has received around 36% of its annual average rainfall so far this season.
