UP Migrant Worker Found Hanging at Gujarat Police Station After Seeking Help To Return Home

A 39-year-old migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh was found hanging inside an electric room at the Shaherkotda police station in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, hours after he approached police for help in returning home. The man, identified as Raju Jatav from Lakhimpur Kheri district, had reportedly been facing financial difficulties and needed money to travel back to Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, Jatav contacted the police control room around 3:48 a.m. on September 14 after reaching Ahmedabad’s Asarwa railway station. A PCR-35 team from Shaherkotda police station was sent to the spot after receiving information that he was being harassed. Jatav reportedly told police that he had recently lost his job but could not clearly explain the circumstances. He later said he had been working as a labourer in Moti Khavdi, Jamnagar, for around three months. He had left Jamnagar intending to return to his native place in Uttar Pradesh. After getting down at Asarwa railway station, he sought police assistance. Police officials said Jatav appeared distressed during questioning. He was counselled and allowed to speak with a relative over the phone. During the conversation, he reportedly said he needed money for his journey home. His relative assured him that the money would be transferred online in the morning. As it was raining and Jatav did not have a place to stay, he asked police if he could remain at the station until the money arrived and then take a morning train home.

Police said he was allowed to stay at the station and an entry was made in the station diary. DCP Zone-3 Rupal Solanki said Jatav was not detained or taken into custody in connection with any offence. According to police, Jatav later went downstairs to the ground floor and slept. At around 8:30 a.m., after the officer on duty had completed the shift, police staff noticed that the door of an electric room was locked from inside. When repeated knocking received no response, personnel looked through a slightly open window and found Jatav hanging inside the room. Police subsequently registered an accidental death case at Shaherkotda police station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. An inquest panchnama was conducted in the presence of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. A forensic post-mortem examination was also carried out by a panel of doctors and videographed. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Jatav’s death and are seeking more information about his employment and situation in Jamnagar. His brother is expected to arrive from Delhi, after which investigators hope to gather further details about the events preceding his death.
