Tensions escalated dramatically at the Uttarakhand Ayurved University (UAU) campus on Wednesday after protesting students climbed atop an overhead water tank to demand immediate resolution of their long-pending administrative and academic grievances.
The high-visibility demonstration marks a sharp escalation in an ongoing standoff between the university administration and its students. Protesters stated that despite qualifying for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), they have faced persistent hurdles regarding admissions into vacant Ayurvedic seats. The situation is further compounded by severe academic delays, with students raising alarms over examination results that have remained non-declared for the past four years, alongside a failure to conduct subsequent term exams. Visuals from the campus showed police and local authorities gathered at the site, attempting to negotiate with the students overhead and secure their safe descent. Protesters, however, maintained that they would not stand down without concrete, written assurances regarding their academic timelines and seat allocations.
Addressing the rising discontent, Arun Kumar Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor of Uttarakhand Ayurved University, stated that administrative steps are underway to address the impasse. "The issue will be taken up at the council meeting scheduled for August 12, where a decision will be made," Tripathi said.
The university has faced repeated student unrest in recent years over administrative backlogs, delayed examination schedules, and governance issues affecting state and affiliated Ayurvedic colleges. Protesting students argue that multi-year delays in declaring examination results have left their professional futures in limbo, preventing them from progressing in their clinical training or applying for postgraduate positions. ‘Can’t Lathicharge Just Because There Is Agitation’: Supreme Court’s Big Remark on Student Protests.
