Roorkee, May 2: In a horrifying incident near Rahimpur gate in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, a young engineering student lost her life after being hit by a train while shooting a reel on the railway track. The victim, identified as Vaishali, was a resident of Haripur Tongia and a student at Core (College of Engineering, Roorkee). The horrifying accident resulted in her body being cut into pieces while two other students narrowly escaped the oncoming train.

According to a report by the Jagran, Vaishali, along with two of her friends, a male and female student, was filming an Instagram reel near the railway track when the tragic incident occurred. Despite efforts to avoid the train, Vaishali was struck and killed instantly. The police promptly arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation into the accident. The authorities have taken custody of her body for further proceedings. Inspector Govind Kumar, in charge of Ganganahar Kotwali, stated that the accident occurred during the filming activity, emphasising that the police are thoroughly probing the matter. Data from the Government Railway Police (GRP) revealed a significant rise in such incidents, with 93 deaths recorded till June 2023, marking a troubling 63 per cent increase from previous years. Deputy Inspector General (GRP) P Renuka Devi emphasised the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures, particularly targeting communities residing near railway lines. The ongoing rail safety month aims to educate the public about the hazards of proximity to tracks and discourage unsafe behaviors like stone pelting, recognized as criminal offenses under railway regulations.
