Viral Video of Leopard Sighting Near Mumbai's Dindoshi Triggers Concern; Forest Officials Urge Calm

A viral video of a leopard roaming near human settlements in Mumbai's Dindoshi triggered concern among residents, prompting the Thane Forest Department’s Mumbai Range team to visit the area. Officials urged calm, advising against forwarding clips without context, and reminded residents that big cats frequently enter forested edges in search of stray dogs.

A video showing a leopard roaming close to a human settlement in Dindoshi has been circulating on local social media platforms and WhatsApp groups, triggering concern among residents. The Thane Forest Department’s Mumbai Range team visited the area to sensitise residents about leopard sightings and appealed to people not to spread unnecessary panic by forwarding the video without context.

The locality borders forested stretches linked to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park periphery, where wild animals occasionally move along fringe zones during late hours. In response to resident anxiety, forest personnel conducted ground visits to explain wildlife behavior, outline safety measures, and urge locals against circulating unverified clips that fuel public alarm. Leopard Caught on Camera in Mumbai: Viral Video Shows Big Cat Hunting Stray Dog Outside Residential Society in Mulund.

Forest Department Sensitises Residents on Wildlife Movement

“The area where the leopard was sighted is close to a forest, and such sightings are common. We visited the area and briefed residents on the dos and don’ts, including informing the Forest Department in case of a sighting. Leopards may enter the area in search of stray dogs, which are easy prey. Residents need not panic but should maintain a safe distance if they spot a leopard,” a Forest Department official said.

Officials advised housing societies situated along the periphery to ensure adequate outdoor lighting during evening and night hours. Residents were also advised not to let small children walk unattended after dusk and to report any fresh movement directly to wildlife control helplines rather than attempting to approach the animal.

Precautionary Guidelines and Coexistence Measures

Forest authorities noted that leopards are inherently nocturnal and non-confrontational, frequently navigating green corridors without interacting with human activity. They reiterated that presence near urban edges is usually driven by foraging opportunities rather than predatory aggression toward humans.

Local residential groups were instructed to manage open waste disposal effectively, as unattended food scraps attract stray dogs and rodents, which in turn draw big cats toward human habitations. The department confirmed that patrol teams will maintain routine monitoring across the suburban corridor to track animal movement and ensure public safety.
