Prominent astronomical expert Adel Yousef Al-Marzouq has announced that Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on Friday, March 20, 2026. According to a report by Al-Rai daily, Al-Marzouq’s calculations suggest that the holy month of Ramadan will complete a full 30-day cycle for many Gulf nations.Al-Marzouq explained that observing the Shawwal crescent on Wednesday evening, March 18, will be "extremely difficult," making a confirmed sighting tonight highly unlikely. Due to the moon's position and timing, the crescent is expected to remain invisible to the naked eye and standard optical equipment across much of the region. However, the expert noted that visibility will improve significantly by Thursday evening, March 19. At that time, the crescent is expected to appear larger, higher in the sky, and much easier to detect for both moon-sighting committees and the general public. While countries that commenced fasting on February 18 are projected to complete a full 30 days, nations that started their fast on February 19 are expected to observe a 29-day month, the astronomer noted.

The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a weather forecast for March 18, predicting partly cloudy to cloudy conditions and chance of light rain in scattered areas. This could complicate the sighting of the Shawwal crescent this evening. In addition to cloud cover, the NCM has forecasted strong northwesterly winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h. These winds are expected to kick up dust and sand in some regions, further reducing horizontal visibility for those attempting to spot the moon. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the UAE’s official moon-sighting committee is scheduled to meet following the Maghrib prayers. If the crescent is sighted, Eid al-Fitr 2026 will officially begin tomorrow, Thursday, March 19. In case the crescent is not sighted, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid will be celebrated on Friday, March 20.
