Indian Tourist Alleges Racist Harassment at Japan 7-Eleven, Says Police Reprimanded Store Manager (Video)
An Indian tourist alleged he faced racist harassment at a 7-Eleven store in Japan's Shizuoka prefecture. He claimed police reviewed the incident, found no wrongdoing and apologised before letting him go.
An Indian tourist has alleged that he faced racist harassment at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Japan's Shizuoka prefecture, claiming the store manager questioned his nationality, made discriminatory remarks and called the police over a request to reheat food.
The incident, shared by traveller Anant in a now-viral Instagram video titled 'Japan police saved Indian tourist from racism and harassment', has attracted widespread attention on social media.
What Happened at the 7-Eleven Store?
According to Anant, it was his last day in Shizuoka when he visited a 7-Eleven store and asked a Nepali staff member to reheat his food. The staffer agreed, but before he could do so, the store manager allegedly intervened and began behaving aggressively. Anant claimed the manager asked about his nationality and, after learning he was Indian, accused him of wrongdoing and called the police. Anticipating the situation could escalate, he began recording the interaction on his phone.
Police Reviewed the Incident
Police arrived at the store after receiving the call and reviewed both the situation and the video recorded by Anant.
According to the tourist, officers found that he had done nothing wrong, reprimanded the store manager and allowed him to leave after apologising.
"Later, she called the police against me, but nothing happened. And the police scolded her and let me go with respect and an apology," Anant said in his video. ‘Get the F*ck out of My Country’: Indian Couple Faces Racist Abuse in US, Video Goes Viral.
Video Goes Viral, Social Media Reacts
The Instagram clip has received nearly one million views, with many users expressing support for Anant and urging him to help the Nepali employee who had initially agreed to assist him.
Responding to comments, Anant said he tried to contact the staff member but was not allowed to speak with him.
"I tried a lot to reach out to the Nepali Guy, but the police and the owner didn't allow me to talk to him. I don't know why they were rude to him; maybe because he didn't lie and tried to stand with the truth," he wrote.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and there has been no public response from 7-Eleven Japan regarding the incident at the time of writing.
