Recently, a woman from Karnataka's Bengaluru took to Reddit to reveal that she was harassed and moral policed by her society's board members. In a Reddit post titled "PART:II - Harassed in my own appartment by society board members," the woman said that she lived alone and owns the apartment, but was harassed by a few "uncles" from her society. "Yesterday, hence it was a Saturday night, 5 of my friends came over—4 guys and 1 girl. We weren’t shouting, partying, or playing loud music. We were just cooking food and talking normally," she added. The woman further said that the "uncles" also called the police, who did not take action against her, as she had a recording of the harassment. Later, the woman sent a legal notice to the society and even to all individuals involved. "In my case, I own the flat—but imagine how much worse this is for bachelors living in other cities on rent, who don’t have the resources, legal awareness, or power to fight back. This kind of moral policing and harassment is a serious problem," her post read. In a follow-up post, the woman said that after the incident, the so-called society members were removed from their positions and slapped with a fine of INR 20,000 each. She also said that she filed a civil suit for defamation, trespass, assault, battery, stalking, nuisance, and violation of her right to privacy. "We claimed compensation of INR 62 lakhs," she stated. Reacting to her Reddit post, one user said, "As a bachelor tenant who has faced similar issues, I'm extremely glad you took a stand and won," while a second user added, "She did the right thing". A third user commented, "62 lakhs ???? That's wild".
