Although Maria admitted of not being effected by the smell. It was after she complained that the match turned on it's head and she had to suffer a heavy defeat.
Maria Sakkari, the No. 8 seed from Greece exited from the US Open 2023 in the first round on Monday, August 28, with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Rebeka Masarova, a match she seemed in control of until she mentioned the smell toward the chair umpire during a changeover. Sakkari was leading 4-1 in the first set on at that point. Previously, Nick Kyrgios complained about smelling marijuana during a match in the US Open last year,
