Hurricane Lee Strengthens Into Category 5 Storm as it Churns Towards Caribbean (Watch Video)
In the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Lee, a Category 1 hurricane earlier on Thursday, has been rapidly strengthening and has doubled its wind speeds in the past 24 hours.
According to a Thursday night alert from the National Hurricane Centre at 11 p.m. ET, Hurricane Lee has grown into a strong Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph as it spins across the Atlantic well to the east of the Caribbean.
