South Africa vs New Zealand Highlights And Cricket Score - 25th ODI match - Commentary

End of Over : 49.0 SA: 241/6

Alright then. 242 to win. Who is your money on? This should be one spicy run chase. Stay tuned.

Rassie van der Dussen is giving an interview to Mark Nicholas. Rassie says that it is a bit of a sticky wicket given that there has been two weeks of rain around. Adds that it is not a 300 pitch and hence the batsmen were planning to reach 250-260. Admits that the team has its back to the wall, so has to bowl well today.

Good bowling by New Zealand on a sluggish pitch, except Boult. He was the only one struggling for rhythm throughout the innings while the others did reasonably well. Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 wickets and if you leave out his last over which went for 15, he had the Saffas rattled.

After a 90-minute delay, South Africa began their batting on a sluggish pitch very cautiously, struggling to adapt to the conditions. De Kock went early but what will disappoint the Proteas more is that three batsmen in the top four got starts but could not convert those. There were three half century stands in the innings. Amla took a long time to get going but then was dismissed for 55. Same for Miller, who departed just when he looked to pull the trigger. Only van der Dussen hung in till the end, finishing on a fine unbeaten 67.

Hmmm... 241 then. That in-between score where a team can never be sure 100 percent how to plan its approach. On paper, this looks short. But given how the pitch has behaved, this might just be enough.

48.6 4

Lockie Ferguson to Rassie van der Dussen. FOUR! 10 runs off the final two balls and South Africa finish on 241/6. A length ball outside off, van der Dussen hammers this straight back down the ground and splits long on and long off!

48.3 1

Lockie Ferguson to Chris Morris. The batsman gets a leading edge on that one. One run added to the total.

48.2 0

Lockie Ferguson to Chris Morris. A short ball outside off, Morris is beaten by pace as he looks to pull. Misses.

48.1 4

Lockie Ferguson to Chris Morris. FOUR! A bit fortuitous. A short ball, around middle, Morris looks to pull but gets a top edge. It flies over the keeper to the fence behind.

End of Over : 48 8 Runs SA: 226/6

47.2 1

Matt Henry to Rassie van der Dussen. DROPPED! That was a sitter. A short ball, around middle, Rassie pulls this towards long leg. Lockie Ferguson comes running in and should have gobbled a sitter but puts it down. A single taken.

46.6 0

Lockie Ferguson to Chris Morris. Almost drags it on! Third consecutive slower delivery. A short ball, outside off, Morris looks to pull but gets a bottom edge which just misses the stumps. It goes behind and Latham quickly gets to the ball, has an under-arm shy at the stumps seeing Morris wander out but misses.

46.4 0

Lockie Ferguson to Chris Morris. Outside off, on a length, Morris plays inside the line and is beaten.

Chris Morris comes in now, surprisingly after Andile, when it should have been the other way round.

46.3 W

Lockie Ferguson to Andile Phehlukwayo. OUT! Caught of a full toss. Tell you, this ball is making waves in this tournament. Forget the yorkers. Forget the bouncers. The full toss is the way to go. Pun intended. This is outside off, Phehlukwayo looks to go over mid off but the ball hits the toe end of the bat and lobs to mid off. Simple catch for Kane Williamson who back-tracks at that position.

45.4 4

Trent Boult to Rassie van der Dussen. FOUR! Powerful strike! Full and around off, van der Dussen hammers it straight back past the bowler and splits long on and long off!

A problem here for Rassie van der Dussen. The physio has come out to check his thumb. South Africa do not want another injury, do they?

45.3 0

44.5 W

Lockie Ferguson to David Miller. OUT! In the air, in the air, in the air and taken! New Zealand have got the killer, which might help them evade death. A short ball, outside off, slower in pace, Miller leaps and looks to play the upper cut. He mistimes it and the result is a top edge which flies down towards third man. Trent Boult runs to his left and looks to take the catch with his cupped in reverse fashion. Almost lets it through but manages to hang on. Flashback 2003 World Cup final - anyone remembers the catch Virender Sehwag took to dismiss Adam Gilchrist at deep mid-wicket? That one too, nearly went through his fingers. Big wicket for the Kiwis. 250 might be difficult now.

44.3 1

Lockie Ferguson to David Miller. Outside off, punched through the covers for a single.

43.5 6

Is that a run out? It was an awful mix-up and umpire Ian Gould has taken it upstairs. Replays are indicating that van der Dussen is in.

43.1 2

Trent Boult to David Miller. A length ball, on middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a couple. That one rocketed away.

DRINKS BREAK. South Africa might have to take solace from the fact that they are batting first on this pitch. They simply would not have had any chance in a run chase. The batsmen are simply not getting used to the pitch and are struggling to time the ball. Though, this is one point of view. This is certainly not a 300-plus pitch but what is a good score here? 6 an over from here takes the Proteas close to 240. Can they get there? Will that be good enough? The final phase of the innings begins.

32.3 W

Colin de Grandhomme to Aiden Markram. OUT! Caught in the deep! So Markram is not a cat with 9 lives. After being given a few lives, he eventually gets out, without making much use of those. A length ball, down the leg side, 126 kph, Markram is down the track to go over the top but is done in by the lack of pace. He is early into the shot and hence gets a leading edge. It carries all the way to sweeper cover where Colin Munro comes running in and takes it reverse cup. Risky attempt, as it was near his waist. Markram falls for just 38.

32.2 0

Colin de Grandhomme to Aiden Markram. Hola Wimbledon! The championships are set to begin sometime in July, but Markram is promoting it from now itself. Boult dives to his right, but misses the ball. It hits the stumps and then umpire Ian Gould who was trying to avert it. Mid on mops it up. 30.1 1

Colin de Grandhomme to Aiden Markram. IN THE AIR, BUT PUT DOWN! Ohh... Trent Boult, off all the people! The man who has defied gravity in the past, cannot quite take a sitter this time around. It is a short ball, around middle and leg, Markram pulls it away but it is going almost straight to the man at long leg. Boult has to cover a small distance to his left and he does so, gets to the ball, looks to take the catch but at the last moment, jumps. Don't know why. The ball hits his palms and then goes down. Two runs taken. Is this the fortune which South Africa needed?

Colin de Grandhomme returns. 6-0-17-0 so far.

Lockie Ferguson to Rassie van der Dussen. On a good length outside off, cutting in sharply, van der Dussen looks to flick but misses and is hit on the thigh pad. He does not know where the ball is and does a 360 degree rotation before understanding that it has gone to point. A leg bye taken.

Mitchell Santner to Hashim Amla. OUT! BOWLED! Santner has his man! He was pegging and pegging and pegging away and eventually gets the Mighty Hash. Amla looks to defend a straight ball but is beaten by the dip in flight. That is what such balls do, when they are flighted over the eyeline. It lands around leg, bounces, spins away and hits the top of off stump. A true spinner's delight. Superb. Amla's struggles are over.

27.3 1

Mitchell Santner to Aiden Markram. Dropped short, pulled through square leg for a run.

27.2 2

Mitchell Santner to Aiden Markram. Another risky shot. Markram is looking a touch fidgety out there. Sairaj the inquisitive man - Wonder how is this slow-play going to help South Africa. Let's say if it rains and DLS comes into play, their run-rate is certainly going to be an issue. @Sairaj - Nice tag to your name, by the way. Going by their slow approach, this pitch does not look to be a 350 one. It is more of the 250-260 type and the Proteas are keeping wickets in hand for a late flourish. The forecast is predicted to be sunny later on.

South Africa Playing XI - Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (WK), Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (C), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi (IN for Beuran Hendricks), Imran Tahir.

New Zealand Playing XI (UNCHANGED) - Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (C), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (WK), Jimmy Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis says they would have bowled first as well as the pitch was under the cover. Says it's been a long time since they defeated New Zealand in the World Cup and reckons the Kiwis are a good side and they need to be at their best. On the last win, he says people might say it was just Afghanistan but it was very important to get the win and it was a complete performance. Informs Lungi Ngidi is back in the playing XI and he hopes that the big fast bowler will make an impact.

New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson says they are fielding first looking at the weather and says that the pitch won't change much. On his team, he says they are playing the same side. On whether the break was good, Williamson says they had a few days off which is important in this long tournament. On their record against South Africa in the World Cup, he replies it is irrelevant as South Africa are a good side and they need to play well today if they want to win.

TOSS - After a delay of more than an hour, we are ready for the toss. Both the captains along with the match referee are here for it. New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson has the coin in his hand. South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis calls Heads but it lands in favour of New Zealand. NEW ZEALAND OPT TO BOWL FIRST.

Welcome to the coverage of Match 25 of World Cup 2019. We are finally all set to get underway after all the delay due to the wet outfield. Just for your information, this is now a 49-overs-per-side game. Unbeaten New Zealand take on South Africa. A very important clash for both the sides for different reasons. A win here for New Zealand will take them back to the top of the table. The Kiwis come into this contest after having almost a week's rest. Kane Williamson's side has been excellent so far this tournament but this will be the real test for them after their clash against India was abandoned due to rain. South Africa, on the other hand, finally got a win in this tournament in their last fixture against Afghanistan. They have no time to relax as they need to win all their remaining fixtures to stay in the hunt for a place in the semi-finals. Faf du Plessis will be hoping his side can build on some momentum from the last encounter and stay alive in the tournament. An intriguing clash awaits us. Stay tuned for it as the toss is not far away.

End of Over : 48.3 NZ: 245/6

Thursday, June 20, 2019, sees Australia take on Bangladesh at Trent Bridge. The Aussies are third and a win will take them to the top but Bangladesh have a chance to show their excellent form. That surely won't be an easy game for the Aussies. Do tune in at 10.30 am local (0930 GMT) for all the action from game 26. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Numero uno, go New Zealand! 9 points from 5 games. Does that take one foot of theirs into the semi-finals? They might like to feel so, with West Indies and Pakistan next. As far as South Africa are concerned, they have Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia next. The maximum they can reach is 9 points and they will hope that other teams at the top lose more games.

Victorious New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson, says that in the morning, the wicket was a bit soft, hence bowling first was a better option. Adds that it did look a belter and the bowlers had to adjust, which they did beautifully. On not giving Jimmy Neesham the ball in this game, Williamson says that in this case, de Grandhomme and Santner were bowling well, hence he did not feel the need to go to Jimmy. On Colin de Grandhomme's approach to batting, Williamson says that they just had a chat and from there on, Colin took it on his own. Praises de Grandhomme for playing the blinder, which Kane believes, took the game away from South Africa. Agrees that the Kiwis have done well, playing on a variety of pitches but is quick to admit that there are a few tough games coming their way and the team needs to be prepared to apply itself.

South African skipper, Faf du Plessis, says that the Proteas were aiming for 260 which would have been a great score on this wicket. Which means, he reckons, there were 20 short. Praises Williamson for showing how to bat on this wicket, by seeing off the good bowlers and targetting that one weak bowler and adds that a century in such games on such pitches make the difference. On South Africa's fielding, Faf says that the fielders and bowlers gave it their all but Kane Williamson was too good on the day. On Williamson's catch not being reviewed, du Plessis says that he was standing at long on and since there was no real appeal from either of Tahir or de Kock, they did not review. Admits that the performances have not been there from the individuals in this World Cup but the team is still fighting and stresses that it shall continue.

KANE WILLIAMSON HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that it is nice to be there at the end. Adds that the surface was a tough one to bat upon, with it holding a bit. Praises his bowlers for bowling well upfront. Also credits South Africa for bowling well. On his batting, Kane says that he just focuses on keeping out the tough balls, communicating with his partners, like if the other is playing well, then he can settle down, like it happened with Neesham and de Grandhomme. Does not want to take shine on his own performance and adds that there were plenty of other contributions which were vital in close games like these.

Tough to fault the bowlers of South Africa. They created the chances but their fielders did not support them. Chris Morris picked up 3 wickets but crucially, Imran Tahir was wicketless while Rabada and Ngidi got just one each. There was where the Kiwis played the match perfectly, seeing off the best bowler in the opposition, without giving him any wicket. Here comes the presentation...

Classic batting by Kane Williamson. On a pitch where everyone struggled, he shone brightly. There was nothing much from other batsmen - 35 from Guptill and just a 23 from Neesham. But that 60 from Colin de Grandhomme proved to be vital and their 91-run stand paved the way for the win. Williamson stood like a rock, absorbing all the pressure and being there till the end. He was the pivot in all the stands after Munro got out, ensuring that the Kiwis get home.

A day to forget for South Africa. They struggled on a sluggish pitch and mustered a half-decent score. It could have been more than decent, had their fielders taken those chances. Plenty of catches were put down, run outs were missed and misfields were done. A shoddy effort and in reality, they choked. And to sum up the entire situation, there was a moment when Kane Williamson nicked one behind in the 38th over, to de Kock, off Tahir. But no one appealed. There was a big spike shown on Ultra Edge. The skipper was on 76 then.

Kane Stuart Williamson. Take a bow. The pressure is on you, your players and your opposition. But you stand cool as a cucumber, spraying ice showers and taking your team home. In sublime fashion. Simply superb.

48.3 4

Andile Phehlukwayo to Kane Williamson. FOUR! NZ WIN BY 4 WICKETS! And possibly, possibly, have knocked South Africa out of the competition as well. On a length outside off, Williamson goes back in his crease and guides it behind point. The fielder dives to his left but the ball goes through! Time for the handshakes then!

48.2 6

Andile Phehlukwayo to Kane Williamson. SIX! SLAUGHTERED! That surely should be the game, shouldn't it? Century for Williamson, his 12th in ODIs and probably his most important one. Full and outside off, Kane gets down on a knee and slogs it over mid-wicket for half a dozen! Takes his helmet off and does not even smile. Real ice man. Just soaks in the pressure. Takes in the applause and raises both his hands. What a player. Just one needed now.

48.1 1

Andile Phehlukwayo to Mitchell Santner. A short ball, around middle, pulled powerfully but straight to deep mid-wicket. Just a single. 7 needed from 5.

Last over of the match. 8 needed to win. 7 for a tie. No Super Over here. The teams share points if this is a tie. Andile Phehlukwayo to bowl. 8-0-62-1 so far. Faf du Plessis has a long chat with him. Substitute Duminy comes in to join the conversation. Umpire Ian Gould asks the Proteas to hurry up. About time. Even a normal 100-over game does not last this long. Okay. Lungi Ngidi returns to the field after a possible bathroom break. Duminy goes back. Tahir is into the ears of Phehlukwayo. Third man is up. So is fine leg. Deep backward square leg, deep mid-wicket, long on and long off are the men at the ropes. Finally, the first ball of the final over...
