New Zealand vs India Highlights And Cricket Score 2nd Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 50.0 NZ: 273/8

274 to win. Should not be too much of a problem for the Indians. They could have chased 50-60 less but the batsmen get another opportunity to score some runs under the belt. Especially the openers. Stay tuned.

Excellent comeback by India. At one stage, they were staring at a total in excess of 300. But Shardul Thakur got them back in the game. First, he dismissed Tom Blundell and then, three overs later, produced a spectacular throw to run Martin Guptill out. Saini was impeccable, although wicketless while Chahal and Jadeja applied the choke perfectly. 20-0-93-4 between them. Jasprit Bumrah continues to be a worry. Since injury, he looks a shade of himself, not producing those magical inswingers or outswingers or even the yorkers. Today, he even went for runs. India will hope that he is truly fit.

Luteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor. What a champion knock. Yes, the match is not over. This is not even a match-winning total. It takes great courage to play an innings of character. But it takes greater courage to play an innings out of character. When Rosco stepped in, the Kiwis were in excellent shape and given the touch he was in, he could have easily gone berserk. But in the span of an hour, he saw how the innings got derailed. He curbed his shots and never really played freely. His responsible knock has ensured New Zealand have got something to bowl at.

How did the game come to that stage though? A typical New Zealand collapse. They were 142/1 in the 27th over, thanks to a fine 93-run opening stand and contributions from Guptill, Nicholls and Blundell in the top 3. But Blundell's wicket led to a collapse as the Kiwis slipped from 142/1 to 197/8. Full marks to debutant Kyle Jamieson who hung around with Ross Taylor.

A sub-par total on a good pitch, on a ground with shorter dimensions. But that unbeaten partnership of 76 for the 9th wicket has given the Kiwis a glimmer of a hope. They still need to bowl out of their skins but from a position where 200 looked difficult, they inched close to 275.

49.6 1

Jasprit Bumrah to Ross Taylor. Just a single off the final ball. Taylor punches this through the covers and takes a run. Jamieson wants two but Rosco sends him back. Not sure why. Shardul Thakur to Ross Taylor. DROPPED! Tough, tough over for Shardul. First, the six from a number 10. Then a wide call which he believes should not have been called. And now, a dropped catch. But the ball bursts through his fingers. A run taken.

46.6 wd

Shardul Thakur to Ross Taylor. WIDE. Another one. Shardul is not happy. Neither is Kohli. Taylor just shuffles across a touch and Thakur bowls it wide outside off. Replays show that Rosco did not shuffle across too much.

46.6 wd

Shardul Thakur to Ross Taylor. WIDE. Oh dear. Slower ball gone awry. This almost goes outside the pitch. Taylor tries his best to throw his bat at it but misses.

Shardul Thakur to Kyle Jamieson. A low full toss outside off, squeezed through the covers for a run.

46.4 6

43.1 0

Yuzvendra Chahal to Ross Taylor. Around middle and leg, watchfully defended.

End of Over : 43 4 Runs NZ: 206/8
42.6 1

Shardul Thakur to Ross Taylor. TOP EDGE, DOES NOT CARRY! Full and wide outside off, Taylor reaches out to drive but ends up getting a thick top edge. The ball goes towards third man where Jasprit Bumrah is perhaps a tad late in finding the ball. That costs him. He is a second late in running for the catch and the ball lands before his palms as he dives. Perhaps it hits his fingers as he feels the pain. A single taken.

42.6 wd

Shardul Thakur to Ross Taylor. WIDE. This is surely a wide. A slower ball bouncer again, well outside the wide guideline, left alone.

42.5 0

Interesting. Debutant Kyle Jamieson has been sent ahead of Hamish Bennett.

41.3 W

Yuzvendra Chahal to Tim Southee. OUT! CAUGHT! Another one falls. Full and around off, nicely flighted. Southee looks to play the slog but he has to drag this ball to the leg side. Hence, he mistimes it and finds Navdeep Saini at long on. New Zealand all set to fall short of playing their 50 overs.

End of Over : 40 4 Runs NZ: 195/7
39.6 1

Yuzvendra Chahal to Ross Taylor. SAFE. Landed outside off, Taylor dabs it to short third man. He sets off for a single and the fielder fires a direct hit at the bowler's end. It is referred upstairs but replays show that the fielder took some time to release the ball. That allowed Taylor to get in. 143/7 in Powerplay 2, but more importantly, 43/6 in the last 82 balls.

Direct hit! Total mayhem. Is that another? Referred upstairs. Nope. Taylor is in.

End of Over : 37 5 Runs NZ: 185/6
36.6 W

Shardul Thakur to Colin de Grandhomme. OUT! CAUGHT! De Grandhomme has done it again. Absolutely no awareness about the situation and he keeps throwing his wicket away. A length ball, on middle, de Grandhomme looks to pull but gets a massive top edge. The ball goes high in the air and Shreyas Iyer accepts a sitter running in from deep square leg. New Zealand needed de Grandhomme to stay with Taylor. De Grandhomme needed a boundary to shift the tempo. Not quite matching the team's needs.

35.5 0

Ravindra Jadeja to Colin de Grandhomme. On middle and leg, watchfully defended.

35.4 4

34.2 W

Navdeep Saini to Ross Taylor. OUT! RUN OUT! Another brilliant piece of fielding from India. They were ordinary the other night. Spectacular so far. A length ball, outside off, Taylor taps it towards backward point and takes a start for the single. He then looks up at Neesham as he sees Jadeja haring in. But Neesham is positive about the single and charges across. Big mistake. Never take Jadeja on. 'Sir' gets across from point to his left, picks the ball and fires a throw at the striker's end. Bull's eye. The Indians know it is out but the umpire does not want to take any risks. Refers it upstairs and replays show that Neesham can continue running to the dressing room.

Direct hit! This looks gone too! India are celebrating. Looks like Jadeja has got another wicket. Yes, he has! Neesham is well short.

DRINKS BREAK.

33.1 W

Ravindra Jadeja to Tom Latham. OUT! LBW! The hosts continue spiralling downhill. Third wicket in the span of 41 balls, for 29 runs. Latham departs. Looked to be pretty needless review. Pitched in line of the stumps, Latham looked to sweep but missed and was hit on the pads. Jadeja roared an appeal, the umpire thought for a while and then raised his finger. For some reason, Latham felt it worth reviewing. Maybe, he thought it was going past the off stump. Ball Tracker came in and showed the ball hitting the off stump. Latham goes and takes a review along with him.

Latham has been adjudged LBW! He has taken the review though. Looks plumb. Yes, Ball Tracker confirms.

29.2 W

Ravindra Jadeja to Ross Taylor. OUT! RUN OUT! That is a suicidal single. Full and around middle, Taylor reverse sweeps it towards short third man. He looks up at his partner and Guptill is ready for the single. Shardul Thakur gets across to his left and throws it off balance to the keeper. Rahul whips off the bails and even while appealing, India are already celebrating. In fact, Guptill is already running towards the pavillion. Jadeja is confident that is out. The square leg umpire takes it upstairs and replays show that Guptill is well short. Pretty good throw from Thakur, given that he threw it off balance and that is what perhaps did Guppy in. He might have thought Shardul might not be able to release the ball. Guptill cannot get to his century but worse for New Zealand, they are losing their way now.

29.1 0

We are all in readiness. The Indians get into a huddle. The Kiwi openers stride out to the middle. Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls it will be. Shardul Thakur to start off proceedings to Guppy. Here we go...

PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull observes a few patches of grass on the surface but believes that the ball has to be really short to make the batsmen hop. Expects spinners to travel the distance on what looks like a very good surface. Expects the ball to do a bit in the first 30 minutes but after that, predicts batting to be easier.

India (Playing XI) - Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli(C), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(WK), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Navdeep Saini (IN FOR MOHAMMED SHAMI), Yuzvendra Chahal (IN FOR KULDEEP YADAV) and Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand (Playing XI) - Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham(C AND WK), Mark Chapman (IN FOR MITCHELL SANTNER), James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson (DEBUT) (IN FOR ISH SODHI), Tim Southee and Hamish Bennett.

New Zealand captain, Tom Latham, says that he too, was looking to bowl first. Fingers crossed, he hopes to bat well again and put up a big total on the board. On the previous win, Tom says that it is a great feeling to have after a forgetful T20I series. Wants his unit to keep learnings from that game, especially with the ball. On the team changes, Latham says that Mark Chapman is featuring tonight, because Mitchell Santner pulled up with a sore back. On the other change, Tom says that Kyle Jamieson makes his ODI debut in place of Ish Sodhi, who is no more a part of the squad. Is excited to feature Jamieson's raw pace.

Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, says that it looks like a pretty hard wicket and the new balls might do a bit. Observes that the straighter boundaries are small here, so defending would be difficult. Also remembers India's manner of victory in the first T20I at this venue, so all these account into the decision. Praises the Kiwis for batting well in the previous ODI and not wanting to blame his players for the loss, just wants the intensity to be maintained throughout the game. On the team changes, Kohli informs that Mohammed Shami has been rested with Test cricket coming up after this series. Adds that Shami is one of India's main bowlers, so wants him to be fresh. Is excited to have Navdeep Saini as his replacement. Informs the other change as Yuzvendra Chahal coming in for Kuldeep Yadav, with the main reason being that Chahal has been out of ODIs for a long time, hence is being played tonight.

TOSS - Time for the flip of the coin. Latham tosses it, HEADS is the call and it is a HEAD. INDIA WILL CHASE.

WEATHER - There is some rain forecast for this game but as of now, it is bright and sunny. Hopefully, it stays that way.

It was a special innings from a few players the other night - Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Kedar Jadhav, Henry Nicholls, Tom Latham and Ross Taylor. The last name making a big impression. Both sides had issues with their bowling and would aim to do better in this game. Expect another cracker.

0-1 down and a must-win game to stay alive in the series. How many times have we seen this in the past? Plenty. India have made it a habit of being slow starters but then have also followed it up with commanding consecutive wins. Would we be seeing that in this series as well? Hello and a warm welcome to the second ODI between New Zealand and India in Auckland.

End of Over : 48.3 IND: 251/10

That ends a nerve-wracking game. A fine way to end your Saturday evening, eh? There is one more match left in this series. We head back to Mount Maunganui where the 5th T20I was played. The third and final ODI will be played on Tuesday, 11th February, 2020 at 3 pm local (0200 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

New Zealand skipper, Tom Latham, says that it's a great victory today. Mentions that in the last match the batsmen won them the game and today the bowlers did the job. Tells that it's always a funny wicket and sometimes 270 looks like 290 if you pick early wickets so he was okay with the total. Adds that the way his bowlers kept picking wickets throughout was really pleasing but he was never satisfied till the last wicket went down. On Luke Ronchi coming out to field, Latham replies that it was just about juggling as Tim Southee was not feeling well. Praises Kyle Jamieson for his debut game. States that winning 3-0 will be great but he wants to keep his fingers crossed.

Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, starts by saying that it's been two pretty good games and it's good to watch for the fans. Is happy with the way they finished after the top order flopped. Admits they gave away too many runs at the backend of the first innings. Praises the batting efforts of Jadeja, Saini and Iyer. States that it's a big revelation for them to see the kind of fightback shown by the lower order. Tells that they have nothing to lose now and can play expressive cricket that they are known to play and might hand out chances to some fringe players. Shares that there were no messages sent to Saini and Jadeja and they were following their instincts as Kohli feels that sometimes it confuses the minds of the batsmen. Also adds that the team wanted them to take their own decisions. Is pleased with the fightback shown by the lower order which also gives confidence to the middle and top order batsmen.

KYLE JAMIESON IS THE MAN OF THE MATCH! The debutant says that it's a bit of a high at the moment and he is trying to sink in the feeling. Tells that it was nice to contribute with the bat and the ball. On the batting plans, it was just to try and stay there till the end. Adds that he felt relieved after getting a wicket in his first over. On the difference that international cricket brings, Kyle mentions that it's quite high intensity with a big crowd watching.

Coming to the bowling. Who lost their nerves more? Guess, India. They had the innings under control but just could not hit the yorker mark consistently at the death. Chahal took a 3-fer while Thakur got a couple. New Zealand were well on top till the 31st over but they nearly found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. All bowlers contributed but the ones who did most of the damage were Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee. The debutant took the first wicket and also broke the 8th wicket stand to get rid of Saini, ending India's hopes while Southee dismissed Kohli and Jadhav, not allowing the middle order to fire. Please stay tuned for the presentation.

Nothing is over till it is really over. Jadeja and Saini proved that. Navdeep Saini proved to be the surprise package, as initially he took his time but then started to cut loose. He took on Colin de Grandhomme in the 44th over, smashing the bowler for three boundaries and getting India back in the run chase. Jadeja and Saini added 76 for the 8th wicket and almost took India home.

Surely 274 was not a big target on a small ground for the Indians. But it did seem like the pitch got a bit on the slower side. The visitors lost their openers cheaply and then when the floodlights took full effect, batting looked to be getting difficult. The middle order was blown away and all of a sudden, the tourists found themselves 153/7, needing 121 from 113 balls.

Let us start from how it all began. New Zealand started brilliantly after being asked to bat first and were 142/1 in the 27th over before collapsing to 197/8 in the 42nd. But Ross Taylor found an able partner in debutant Kyle Jamieson as the duo added an unbeaten 76 for the 9th wicket in 51 balls, taking the team total close to 275.

How did this match reach here? We were all looking at New Zealand 200 all out. Naah... debutant Kyle Jamieson had a different say. And then, with India reeling at 153/7, we thought it was game over. But Saini and Jadeja fought almost till the end - nearly taking their team over the line.

Phew! We get another humdinger. New Zealand and India games. Will they cease causing heart attacks? But what a game. A match of the fightbacks.

47.6 0

Hamish Bennett to Jasprit Bumrah. A yorker around leg, Bumrah digs it out on the leg side. 23 needed off 12 balls and Jadeja should take it on himself now to finish this match.

Jasprit Bumrah is the last man in.

47.5 W

Hamish Bennett to Ravindra Jadeja. OUT! Chahal is found short! A total mix-up but Jadeja is not at fault at all. Full and wide outside off, Jadeja squeezes this through the covers. He takes the single and is happy with it. There is a slight misfield and Chahal senses that opportunity to come back for the second. But Jadeja puts his hand out and clearly yells NO. Chahal does not hear that and is halfway down the track. He has to return and by that time, Neesham returns a good throw to Latham who whips the bails off. The square leg umpire does not even refer it upstairs. Replays show that it was a close call but Chahal was short. He smiles.

47.4 2

Hamish Bennett to Ravindra Jadeja. Too full in length on middle, Jadeja drives it straight back and Bennett fails to stop it in his followthrough. They complete a single and Chahal shows good awareness in turning for the second in time. They have gathered two in total.

47.4 wd

Hamish Bennett to Ravindra Jadeja. Wide! Bennett senses the batsman moving back to create room and bowls it way wide outside off. It's also outside the tramline as Jadeja reaches out and misses. The umpire stretches his arms.

The ball flies off the outside edge down to third man for a boundary. India are smelling a come from behind victory!

46.4 2

Kyle Jamieson to Yuzvendra Chahal. What a shot and what a stop in the deep! Short in length and outside off, Chahal plays a controlled pull shot over mid-wicket. It's destined to go to the fence but Chapman comes haring across to his left, dives full length and pulls it back just before the fencing. Saves two.

46.3 1

Kyle Jamieson to Ravindra Jadeja. Smart bowling by Jamieson! He follows the batsman down the leg side with a short of a length ball. Jadeja fails to work it away and is hit on the thigh pad. They collect a leg bye.

46.2 2

Kyle Jamieson to Ravindra Jadeja. Great running between the wickets yet again! A smart shot as well. Jamieson lands it on a length close to off, Jadeja helps it with gentle hands to mid-wicket and scampers back for the second run as the bowler himself gives the chase. Jamieson slides near the edge of the circle to field the ball and then has a shy at the bowler's end. But no harm done. FIFTY FOR JADEJA! Sir brandishes his bat like a sword to celebrate it. The job is still not done though.

46.1 2

Colin de Grandhomme charges to the ball and has a shy at the bowler's end. Misses. Had he hit, Chahal was a goner. 45.3 1

Hamish Bennett to Yuzvendra Chahal. RUN OUT MISSED! Jadeja was a goner. Taylor fumbles under pressure. A length ball outside off, Chahal taps it towards point and sets off for a single. Jadeja knows it is a suicidal call and gives up halfway. But Taylor, in a hurry to release the ball, fumbles and misfires a bad throw. Kyle Jamieson to Navdeep Saini. OUT! BOWLED! Jamieson roars. The slower ball does the trick. This was not far from being sent out of the stadium. This is on a length and Saini is ready with his pull. But the slower ball comes on late and the bat swing is already completed by then. The ball skids on and hits the leg stump. End of a sensational stand of 76 in 80 balls. The batsmen have crossed for a leg bye. Now, the Kiwis take the referral. The replays roll in. Ultra Edge shows no involvement of bat and then the Ball Tracker shows it to be missing leg. 16 from the over and it spoils de Grandhomme's figures. He finished with 10-1-54-2!
