Strengthening India’s Chess Footprint
The choice of India as the host nation reflects the country’s significant emergence as a global powerhouse in the sport. With a rapidly growing ecosystem and a new generation of Grandmasters consistently appearing on the world stage, tournament organisers noted that India provides an ideal environment for the league’s expansion.
While the specific host city is yet to be revealed, FIDE and Tech Mahindra officials stated that the announcement will be made in the coming weeks. Previous editions of the league have leveraged India’s dense digital engagement and passionate fan base to reposition chess as a mainstream spectator sport. Innovative Format and Defending Champions
Season 4 will continue to utilise the league’s signature 'mixed-gender' franchise model. This format features six teams, each composed of six players, including a minimum of two female players and one ‘icon’ player per squad. The matches are played in a rapid-fire format, designed to increase the pace of play and provide a more immersive experience for television and streaming audiences.
The Alpine SG Pipers will enter the fourth season as the defending champions. The team secured the title in December 2025 during the Mumbai edition after a dominant campaign that saw them outmanoeuvre several high-profile opponents in the final rounds.
