Vinesh Phogat won the bronze medal in the 53kg category of World Wrestling Championships 2019 after pinning down two-time World Championships medallist Maria Prevolaraki of Greece 4-1 in the medal round on Wednesday.  Phogat, who earlier became the first Indian wrestler to secure an Olympic Quot for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, is also the first Indian to win a medal in the ongoing UWW World Senior Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. It was also Phogat's first-ever medal at the World Wrestling Championships.

Earlier in the day, Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian wrestler to secure an Olympic quota for the 2020 Tokyo Games after winning both her matches in the repechage round of the 53-kg weight category at the ongoing World Wrestling Championships. She defeated former World Championships bronze medallist Yuliya Khalvadzhy of Ukraine 5-0 and then went on to upset World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt 8-2 in the second bout of the repechage round.

Vinesh Phogat was knocked out of the World Wrestling Championships in the pre-quarterfinals stage where she was trounced 7-0 by Japanese reigning world champion Maya Mukaida.
