PlayStation Plus Price Hike: New Subscription Costs Rise From May 20, Existing Subscribers in India To Be Affected

PlayStation Plus is getting more expensive. Sony has announced a price increase for its PS Plus subscription service effective May 20, citing "ongoing market conditions" as the reason, joining Microsoft and Nintendo in raising prices across the gaming industry amid broader hardware and memory cost pressures.

What Is Changing and From When

For new customers, the 1-month PS Plus Essential subscription will rise from $10 to $10.99 in the US, with regional pricing set at 9.99 euros and £7.99 in Europe and the UK respectively. The 3-month subscription jumps from $25 to $27.99, with European pricing at 27.99 euros and £21.99 for UK subscribers. Importantly, the price increase applies only to the PS Plus Essential tier, which is the base level of the service. PS Plus Extra at $15 per month and PS Plus Premium at $18 per month remain unchanged for now. PS Plus Essential covers online multiplayer for PS4 and PS5 games and includes a selection of free monthly games.

Who Is Affected in India

While Sony has clarified that existing subscribers are largely protected from the price hike, there is a significant exception: subscribers in India and Turkey will see the new pricing applied to their accounts regardless of their current subscription status. This makes Indian PS Plus subscribers among the most directly affected by the change, even if they are already paying customers. PlayStation State of Play 2025: Sony Expected To Host Live Event on February 12, May Announce Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2 Other Video Games, Trailers.

The Bigger Picture: RAMageddon and Gaming Price Hikes

This increase does not exist in isolation. Sony raised PS5 console prices across its entire lineup back in March. Microsoft followed with Xbox console price increases. Nintendo announced earlier this month that the Switch 2 will see a price hike in September. The driving force behind all of these increases appears to be what industry analysts are calling RAMageddon: a sharp spike in demand for RAM and SSDs driven by AI data centre expansion, pushing up hardware costs across the board for consumer electronics and gaming companies alike.

Sony has not provided specific details about the market conditions behind the PS Plus increase and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

With PS Plus estimated to have just over 50 million subscribers globally as of end 2024, even a $1 monthly increase represents a significant revenue shift for Sony. For Indian gamers already navigating rising console prices, the timing could not be worse.
