Bengaluru, March 13: Shantanu Narayen will step down as Chief Executive Officer of Adobe Inc. after an 18-year tenure that reshaped the software company into a global cloud and artificial intelligence leader. The company confirmed on Thursday that Narayen, 62, will remain CEO until a successor is appointed and will then transition to Executive Chair of the Board.

A Leadership Era That Transformed Adobe

Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 and became CEO in 2007. During his leadership, he spearheaded one of the most significant business transformations in the software industry, shifting Adobe from selling boxed perpetual software licenses to a cloud-based subscription model. WAVES Summit 2025: Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen Says GenAI Enabling Indian Creators To Transcend Traditional Mediums.

The launch of Adobe Creative Cloud in 2012 initially faced skepticism from investors and customers. However, the move ultimately became a defining moment for the modern Software-as-a-Service industry. The subscription strategy helped drive massive growth for Adobe over the past decade.

Under Narayen’s leadership, Adobe’s market capitalization grew from roughly USD 20 billion to more than USD 240 billion, while the company’s annual revenue expanded nearly sixfold to about USD 24 billion. Exploring Adobe’s Ethical AI: What Can You Do With Adobe Firefly?

Transition Comes During the AI Boom

The leadership change comes as Adobe positions itself for the next phase of innovation driven by generative artificial intelligence. The company has been rapidly integrating its Firefly AI models across major products such as Photoshop and Illustrator.

Despite its strong position in creative software, Adobe faces increasing competition from AI-focused platforms including Midjourney and OpenAI, which are rapidly expanding in the generative content space.

In a message to employees, Narayen said leading Adobe had been the defining privilege of his career.

“The privilege of leading this company has been the greatest honor of my career,” he said. “I am committed to setting Adobe up for its next decade of growth with the right leader while continuing to advance our strategic priorities.”

CEO Search Underway

Adobe’s board of directors has formed a special committee led by independent director Frank Calderoni to oversee the search for Narayen’s successor. The committee will evaluate both internal and external candidates capable of guiding Adobe through its next phase as an “AI-first” company.

The company has not provided a specific timeline for naming the new CEO.

Strong Earnings but Market Jitters

The leadership announcement came alongside Adobe’s fiscal 2026 first-quarter results. The company reported revenue of USD 6.4 billion, representing a 12 percent increase year-over-year and surpassing analyst expectations.

Despite the strong performance, Adobe shares dropped more than 7 percent in after-hours trading, reflecting investor uncertainty following the departure announcement of a long-serving CEO.

Industry Reaction

Several technology leaders acknowledged Narayen’s influence on the global software industry. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella praised Narayen for his leadership and mentorship, highlighting the significant impact he has had across the technology sector.

For now, Narayen will continue leading Adobe while the board conducts its CEO search and prepares the company for the next stage of its AI-driven future.
