Singapore's labour market experienced an upward tick in job cuts during the third quarter, with retrenchment figures reaching their highest level since the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in late 2020. Business reorganisations served as the primary catalyst behind the reduction wave, prompting increased scrutiny from market regulators regarding economic vulnerabilities.

Total layoffs climbed to 4,800 in the July-September period, rising from 4,620 recorded during the previous quarter. As per a report by The Economic Times, this quarterly total marks the highest volume of workforce reductions since 5,640 employees were let go in the final quarter of 2020. Amazon Layoffs: 250 Software Engineering Positions Eliminated in Devices Unit; Check Details.

Sector Vulnerabilities and Employment Growth

Despite the rise in corporate restructuring, overall economic indicators showed that total employment expanded by 27,700 during the third quarter, surpassing the 11,400 additions registered in the preceding quarter. However, job losses remained concentrated within outward-oriented sectors as companies navigated shifting global demand and operational adjustments.

The Ministry of Manpower noted that the proportion of business entities anticipating further workforce reductions over the upcoming three months ticked up slightly to 3.1 percent, compared to 2.8 percent previously. Authorities emphasized that these emerging indicators require close observation even as general employment numbers continue to register positive quarterly growth.

Unemployment Rates and Resident Job Metrics

Singapore's baseline unemployment rate remained stable at 2.0 percent through September. Nevertheless, resident and citizen unemployment metrics experienced minor increases, edging up to 3.0 percent and 3.1 percent respectively, compared to 2.9 percent and 3.0 percent in August. Why Big Tech Prefers Voluntary Exit Programs Over Traditional Layoffs?
