Spotify announced a major policy update targeting synthetic creators, confirming it will begin tagging virtual and artificial intelligence-generated artist profiles with an “AI Persona” label starting in mid-September. The new feature will display the label directly on artist profiles, in search results, and beside song titles on playlists. Along with the visible tag, Spotify is taking a stronger structural measure: music linked to AI Persona profiles will be excluded from the streaming service’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.
The policy specifically addresses public identity rather than production tools. It distinguishes fully synthetic personas from human creators who use AI software during recording or mixing. While artists can voluntarily disclose an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists, the platform will also deploy human moderators and proprietary AI detection tools to identify and tag photorealistic synthetic profiles that do not self-report. The move follows growing pressure from major record labels, industry advocacy groups, and listeners concerning deepfakes, stream manipulation, and fake artist profiles clogging recommendations. By severing synthetic identities from key discovery engines like Discover Weekly and editorial playlists, Spotify effectively restricts their reach to users who actively search for or follow them directly.
