A large swarm of bees briefly descended on the White House grounds Friday afternoon, May 15, drawing attention from journalists and staff gathered outside the executive residence. Reporters on the North Lawn described seeing thousands of bees flying across the area before the swarm eventually settled into a tree on the property.

The incident occurred near the White House press staging area known as “Pebble Beach,” where television crews regularly conduct live broadcasts. NewsNation correspondent Kellie Meyer said the bees briefly blocked part of the White House driveway. “Walked into the White House and a swarm of bees was blocking the driveway,” Meyer wrote on X. “Time to turn around.” No injuries or stings were immediately reported, and the bees later formed a temporary cluster, known as a bivouac, in a nearby tree. Donald Trump Invites Xi Jinping to White House for September 24 Visit Following High-Stakes Beijing Summit.

White House Honey Program Expanded Recently

The source of the swarm remains unclear, though the incident comes shortly after First Lady Melania Trump expanded the White House honey program with a new beehive installed on the South Lawn.

According to a recent White House release, the hive is a replica of the White House itself and is part of a broader effort to support pollination and honey production on the grounds. The White House says the program can house as many as 70,000 bees during peak summer months and produce between 230 and 255 pounds of honey annually.

President Donald Trump and the first lady also showcased the bees during a recent visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, both known for their interest in beekeeping and environmental conservation.

Role of the White House Bees

Honey produced by the White House bees is used in meals prepared at the executive residence and is occasionally presented as official gifts from the president and first lady.

The bees also support pollination efforts for the White House produce garden, flower-cutting garden, and vegetation surrounding the National Mall. Officials say excess honey is donated to local food banks in Washington when production exceeds White House needs. There has been no official estimate of how many bees were involved in Friday’s swarm.
