Wayne County Sheriff Tom Ballinger said officers responded to reports of a disturbance and gunfire around 9:30 pm local time on July 5. As officers arrived at the scene, they immediately came under fire.
"Officers responded to the area and immediately started taking fire. At this point in time, we have lost an officer in the line of duty," Ballinger said. The sheriff confirmed that the suspect was killed. He also said two civilians died in the shooting, bringing the total death toll to four, including the suspect.

According to local reports, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. Authorities used drones and a helicopter during the operation, while officers searched nearby homes in the area around Cheyenne Drive.
Residents were urged to avoid the vicinity of Rittman High School as the investigation continued. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or the suspect, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
