Miller said she was bitten several times while sitting around a campfire with her family at Cheney Lake, a popular recreational area in Kansas. Initially, the bites caused little concern. However, four days later, she noticed a painful bruise on her calf that continued to worsen.

"This one kept swelling and swelling, and it was like a fire stir that's metal," she said. "It was like shooting down my leg into my foot, and it felt like I was being stabbed." Infection Led to Sepsis and Liver Failure

Doctors found multiple blood clots in Miller's leg and performed surgery to remove them. A drain was inserted into the wound, but it later became infected.

According to Miller, the wound developed infections caused by staph and gram-negative bacteria, both of which are commonly associated with hospital-acquired or wound infections. While these bacteria can naturally exist on the skin, they can cause serious illness if they enter the bloodstream through open wounds.

The infection progressed to sepsis and contributed to end-stage liver failure. "They couldn't keep my levels above even critical," Miller told KAKE News. "They gave me three days up to a month to live, so that was scary." After two weeks in hospital, doctors reportedly discussed hospice care with her family because of the seriousness of her condition.

Doctors Suspect Brown Recluse Spider

Doctors have not confirmed which species of spider bit Miller. However, they believe it may have been a brown recluse spider, one of the two medically significant venomous spiders commonly found in Kansas, alongside the black widow.

Brown recluse spiders are widespread across parts of the Midwest and southern United States. Their venom can damage skin tissue, leading to necrosis in some cases, and may increase the risk of secondary bacterial infections, although severe systemic complications remain uncommon.

Dr Raymond Cloyd, a horticultural entomologist at Kansas State University, said early evidence pointed to a possible brown recluse bite. "The two venomous ones that we have in Kansas are the black widow spider, and the more numerous one is the brown recluse spider, which prevails throughout most of the Midwest to mid-central Kansas."

After nearly a month in intensive care, multiple medical procedures and continued treatment at home, Miller was discharged in late July. She is now among thousands of Americans awaiting a liver transplant as doctors continue to monitor her recovery. While her condition has stabilised, she continues to receive treatment as she recovers from the long-term effects of the infection and liver failure.
