The Trump administration on Friday, May 8, released a new batch of declassified files, videos, and photographs related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), marking the first phase of a broader disclosure initiative aimed at increasing public access to government records on unexplained aerial incidents.

The White House described the release as part of President Donald Trump’s Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) program, which officials said is designed to centralise previously classified material from across US government agencies. According to the administration, the newly released records include images from Apollo space missions, FBI files, transcripts of astronaut communications, and videos linked to unidentified aerial sightings.

Among the documents released are photographs captured during the Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 missions. One image taken from the lunar surface appears to show three unidentified bright objects in the sky. In one exchange, an operator described “very bright particles or fragments” drifting past the spacecraft. Another operator compared the scene to “the Fourth of July,” while describing “jagged, angular fragments” tumbling outside the window. Officials did not provide a definitive explanation for the observations included in the files.

FBI Images and Historical UAP Records

The disclosure also includes photographs from FBI records linked to an incident on New Year’s Eve in 1999. The images reportedly show unidentified objects appearing near US aircraft.

The White House said the latest release represents only the first phase of a continuing declassification effort, with additional material expected to be published in the future. Officials said all released content is being made publicly accessible without security clearance requirements.

In a statement, the White House said the administration aimed to provide “maximum transparency” regarding government records connected to UFOs and extraterrestrial phenomena. The release follows comments made earlier this year by former President Barack Obama during a podcast discussion about unexplained aerial phenomena. President Trump later criticised those remarks and subsequently announced plans to declassify more government files related to UFOs and UAPs.

Several senior administration officials described Friday’s release as an unprecedented step in public disclosure.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the documents had long remained hidden under classification and argued that public access was necessary to address years of speculation surrounding the subject.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said intelligence agencies were coordinating with the Department of War to review and declassify additional records as part of an ongoing transparency effort.

The administration indicated that further disclosures could follow as agencies continue reviewing archived records linked to unidentified aerial incidents and extraterrestrial-related investigations.

Officials did not say when the next release would take place but stated that the process would continue under the PURSUE program in coordination with intelligence and defence agencies.
