Five middle school students in Mississippi are being recognised for their quick thinking after their school bus driver lost consciousness while transporting dozens of children. The incident, captured on video by the Hancock County School District, showed the bus continuing to move with 40 students onboard as the driver experienced a medical emergency.

According to officials, the driver, Leah Taylor, passed out due to an asthma attack while the bus was in motion. With no adult able to respond immediately, several students acted within seconds to prevent a potentially dangerous situation from escalating. White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting: Fox News Host Jimmy Failla Caught On Hot Mic Roasting Bad Security Before Gunman Incident (Watch Video).

Two students moved to the front of the bus and took control. One student grabbed the steering wheel to keep the vehicle steady, while another applied the brakes to bring it to a stop.

At the same time, another student assisted the unconscious driver by administering her medication. A fourth student contacted authorities, ensuring emergency services were on their way. Driver Credits Students With Saving Lives

“I’m grateful for my students,” said Taylor, according to The Associated Press. “They’re the ones that saved my life and everybody else’s on that bus.” No serious injuries were reported following the incident, and authorities confirmed that the students’ actions played a critical role in avoiding harm.

School Honors Students’ Actions

School officials publicly recognised the five students for their actions. They were honored at a pep rally and later rewarded with a lunch field trip. "They didn’t wait for somebody to step in, they stepped up themselves, and that says a lot about their character," said Dr. Melissa Saucier.

Incidents involving driver medical emergencies are rare but can pose significant risks, particularly when large groups of students are involved. School districts often train drivers for emergency scenarios, but this situation highlighted the importance of quick thinking by passengers when unexpected events occur.
