New Delhi, March 25: An Indian-origin elected official in the United States, KP George, has been convicted in a financial misconduct case that has drawn significant attention across political and Indian diaspora circles. A jury in Fort Bend County, Texas, found the county judge guilty on two counts of money laundering following a week-long trial centred on alleged misuse of campaign funds.

The conviction relates to third-degree felony charges, which carry a potential sentence ranging from two to 10 years in prison. George has opted for the presiding judge to decide his sentence, with proceedings set to begin on June 16. After the verdict, he was briefly taken into custody and later released on a USD 20,000 bond, with conditions including surrendering his US passport. Indian-Origin Madhu Raju May Face Deportation From US Over Viral Dance Video at World War 2 Memorial in Washington DC.

Who Is KP George?

KP George is a US-based politician of Indian origin with roots in Kerala. He rose to prominence in 2018 when he became the first person of colour elected as Fort Bend County Judge in Texas, a key administrative role in one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. His journey from humble beginnings in Kakkodu village in Kerala to American public office has often been described as inspirational.

According to reports, George grew up in modest conditions, speaking Malayalam and living in a basic home while his father worked as a truck driver earning minimal income. Over the years, he built a career and entered politics, initially aligning with the Democratic Party before later switching to the Republican Party.

However, his political career has now been overshadowed by serious legal troubles. Prosecutors argued that George repeatedly misrepresented campaign finances, allegedly transferring more than $46,000 from campaign accounts into personal accounts. They claimed he used these funds for personal expenses such as car payments and other costs, while also moving money across state lines through accounts linked to Delaware and Massachusetts. Savani Brothers Convicted in US: Indian-Origin Brothers, Bhaskar Savani, and Arun Savani, From Pennsylvania Found Guilty in Multi-Million Dollar Fraud, Could Face 400 Years in Jail.

The defence, however, maintained that the case was based on incomplete records and incorrect assumptions. George’s legal team argued there was no concrete evidence of illegal financial activity or intent to commit fraud, calling the prosecution’s case an example of government overreach.

Despite these arguments, the jury sided with the prosecution and convicted him on more serious felony counts, rejecting lesser charges. Under Texas law, the conviction does not immediately remove George from office. His removal is expected only after sentencing, though an appeal could delay the process further.

In addition to the current conviction, George also faces a separate misdemeanour case related to alleged misrepresentation of identity, with that trial scheduled to begin in May.
