As protests have erupted across various cities and states in India against the NDA government’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), those protesting have taken up old and new ways to make their dissent heard. On December 17, students from IIT Kanpur held a protest to express solidarity with students from Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi. At the protest a recitation was held of noted Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s revolutionary poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’. Subsequently, a complaint was filed by Dr Vashimant Sharma, a temporary faculty member, against the students who held the recitation. IT-Kanpur has now formed a committee to inquire into the complaint against the recitation and as part of the inquiry the panel will also decide whether the poem is anti-Hindu.
