Former Chief Justice Of India Ranjan Gogoi was appointed to the Rajya Sabha by the current government. His nomination was confirmed by President Ram Nath Kovind on March 16. However, the opposition has raised questions on the timing of the appointment. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi questioned whether it was a "quid pro quo" as Gogoi presided over a string of judgements which seemed to favour the BJP government at the Centre.
