Southern Indiana man accidentally shot and killed his six-year-old daughter while cleaning a handgun. Makayla Bowling was shot around 10:30 pm on Friday night inside her home in Salem, Indiana. State Police said that the young girl was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived at the hospital the same night.
Authorities said that her father was cleaning the gun and thought the weapon was unloaded, but it discharged, hitting the girl in the head. Makayla was taken to the Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky by air ambulance. She was pronounced dead shortly after.
The name of the father has not been released. The shooting remains under investigation and the police said detectives don't believe foul play was involved. Authorities have also not disclosed if charges will be filed against Makayla's father. Salem is about 80 miles south of Indianapolis.
