Iran Claims Capture of Second US Underwater Drone in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy on Sunday claimed it had captured a second US unmanned underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that the system was being used for espionage. The IRGC identified the vessel as a Remus 600 autonomous underwater vehicle (UUV) and said it had been handed over to military specialists for examination and data recovery, according to a report.

IRGC Says Drone Was Captured in Hormuz

According to a statement carried by Iranian state media, the IRGC Navy said the operation involved intelligence capabilities and electronic warfare. Iranian authorities said the Remus 600 was now under the control of military specialists, who would examine the system and attempt to retrieve information stored on it. The claim has not been independently verified.

Second US Underwater Vehicle Claimed by Iran

The latest announcement follows an earlier Iranian claim this month that it had captured another US underwater drone, identified as the Dive-LD. US Central Command previously said an underwater drone reported as seized by Iran had malfunctioned and was not carrying sensitive or classified equipment. The US said the vehicle had been surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations.

Iran Declares Strait of Hormuz Closed

The IRGC also reiterated its position that the Strait of Hormuz is closed and warned that it would respond to what it described as dangerous or unauthorised activity in the waterway.

The development comes amid continued tensions between Iran and the United States over the strategic waterway. Commercial traffic through the strait has fallen sharply during the ongoing conflict. Reuters reported earlier this week that only two commodity vessels crossed the waterway on one day, compared with an estimated pre-conflict average of about 125 large commercial vessels daily.

Tehran Rejects Further US Pressure

Iranian officials have also continued to signal that they are prepared for renewed confrontation with Washington. Iranian Army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia said the country's armed forces were prepared for any further US attack and warned that Washington would face greater damage if it launched another operation.

The latest claims about the underwater vehicle come as diplomatic efforts over the Strait of Hormuz remain uncertain. The status of the alleged capture, the condition of the Remus 600 and whether any sensitive information was recovered have not been independently confirmed.
