"This proposed change seeks to more faithfully honor our nation's heritage, our language, and our identity," President David Adeang said when he initially introduced the measure to Parliament in January. Lawmakers subsequently endorsed the constitutional amendment across two required rounds of voting. While an initial referendum was considered, the government announced following extensive discussions that a public vote was ultimately unnecessary.
