A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of New Zealand’s South Island after a strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Fiordland region on Thursday evening. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued the alert shortly after the quake, warning that land inundation is likely along the West Coast from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point. Residents in these coastal areas have been ordered to evacuate immediately to the nearest high ground, move out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or travel as far inland as possible.

The earthquake hit at 9:14 p.m. local time. According to GeoNet, New Zealand's geological hazard monitoring system, the quake was centered 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) north of the town of Te Anau and occurred at a depth of 53 kilometers. More than 13,000 people reported feeling the tremors within minutes. The shaking was felt widely across the lower South Island, including in the Otago, Southland, and Canterbury regions, with reports of tremors reaching as far north as Christchurch and as far east as Dunedin. Local residents described the earthquake as long, loud, and intense. One Te Anau resident noted that the shaking sounded "like a train," causing items to fall off walls and windows to rattle heavily. Despite the strong shaking, there were no immediate reports of major structural damage or casualties.

NEMA has urged people in the affected coastal areas to act immediately without waiting for further instructions. The agency emphasized that the first tsunami wave may not be the largest and that dangerous coastal activity could continue for several hours. Emergency Mobile Alerts have been deployed to areas under direct threat.

Civil Defence authorities have advised everyone in the warning zones to stay off beaches, out of the water, and away from rivers and estuaries until an official "all-clear" message is given. Several smaller aftershocks have already been recorded in the region following the initial event. How Countries Live with Earthquakes and Build Resilience.

New Zealand sits on the seismically active "Ring of Fire," a 40,000-kilometer arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches girdling much of the Pacific Ocean. Because of this, the country frequently experiences earthquakes, though tremors of this magnitude that trigger tsunami warnings are less common and require immediate safety protocols.
