US Assessment Signals Change in Russia Threat Analysis

Until recently, US intelligence assessments suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin would avoid actions that could trigger a direct confrontation with NATO.

However, according to The Wall Street Journal report, that assessment changed this year, with intelligence agencies considering a wider range of possible Russian actions. NATO Reports Increased Russian Military Activity

NATO members believe Russia has already been carrying out operations designed to test and weaken the alliance’s response capabilities. Western fighter jets have been scrambled multiple times in recent weeks following drone activity, including an incident involving a drone that crossed into Romanian airspace before being intercepted by Ukraine.

NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum highlighted the increase in activity, stating: "The numbers do not lie." The command noted that possible threats include cyberattacks against NATO members, the use of unmarked armed groups to seize territory, or a limited military incursion along NATO’s eastern flank.

NATO Says It Is Prepared to Respond

NATO spokesman Col. Martin O'Donnell said the alliance continues to monitor developments and prepare for possible scenarios. "We are always thinking through and preparing for any number of scenarios," said NATO spokesman Col. Martin O'Donnell.

"NATO is watching and we are ready to deter and defend as necessary." NATO’s eastern members, particularly Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, have increased security measures due to concerns over Russia’s intentions.

One possible scenario discussed by analysts involves Russia attempting to seize a limited area or target critical infrastructure in NATO countries bordering Russia and Belarus.

The three Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, have strongly supported Ukraine and have strengthened their border defences. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said concerns about possible Russian operations remain.

"I cannot deny that we have such information and that it concerns kinetic operations. 'Not on a large scale, but targeted kinetic operations that are very likely to be directed against critical infrastructure," Nausėda said.

The warnings come amid US concerns over ammunition shortages following military support provided to Ukraine and increased demands linked to conflicts in other regions.

Officials and analysts have debated whether Russia could attempt limited actions to create political pressure or test NATO’s unity. Russian opposition politician and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov said: "I think the chances [are] that he'll cross NATO borders, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, just a small incursion using drones.

'I think the chances are growing because Putin needs a winning narrative and Ukraine doesn't offer it.'"

NATO countries continue to assess Russia’s military activities while maintaining deterrence measures along the alliance’s eastern border. Officials have stressed that preparedness and coordination remain central to preventing escalation and responding to any potential threats.
