New Delhi, [India], Mar 10 (ANI): The Election Commission of India (ECI) did not announce the date for the by-poll to 21 legislative seats in Tamil Nadu, thus refusing the demand of political parties like DMK which had urged the poll panel to hold by-polls for these seats along with the Lok Sabha election.DMK leader MK Stalin in a letter to the EC last month had urged it to hold by-polls simultaneously with Lok Sabha elections. This, he argued, will ‘save time of voters, EC, and the government staff and also ease the burden on the exchequer.’18 of these 21 seats had fallen vacant after AIADMK MLAs loyal to the ousted leader TTV Dhinakaran were disqualified in September 2017.The Madras High Court had upheld the Speaker’s decision in the case. Two other seats fell vacant after the death of sitting MLAs while another fell vacant after the sitting MLA was sentenced to three-year imprisonment.
