Mumbai, Feb 17 (PTI) More than 43,000 forest rights have been cleared by the Maharashtra government just in the last three months, an official said Sunday.

This information was given during a meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, called to address various issues related to farmers, said the official in the CM's Office (CMO).

Ministers Girish Mahajan, Sadabhau Khot, MLAs, representatives of farmer organisations and senior government officials were present at the meeting held here Sunday evening.

Officials from Thane, Nashik and Palghar districts joined the meet via video conferencing.

More than 43,000 forest rights were cleared in just three months. Thane district (11,372) and its adjoining Palghar district (over 10,000) accounted for nearly half of these forest rights, the CMO official said.

This essentially means granting legal titles to tribal farmers to the land they have been tilling for long.

Fadnavis directed officials to clear the pending forest rights claims byMarch 15, he said.

Other issues discussed in the meeting related to water, implementation of farm loan waiver, drought assistance and crop insurance, the official said.

Clearing forest rights of tribal farmers and forest- dwelling communities was one of the key demands of cultivators during their agitations launched in the state in the recent past.
