Mumbai, Sep 26 (PTI) Union housing and urban development minister Hardeep Singh Puri Thursday said his ministry in partnership with industry body Naredco will skill the urban poor so that their employment opportunities in the construction sector improves.

Puri said this partnership aims to achieve objectives like alignment of skill training programmes based on industry requirements, supplying skilled manpower to the industry by training the unskilled manpower at construction sites, and ensuring employment through captive placement model.

"It will also encompass up-skilling of construction workers to help them make the sector aspirational by offering career progression opportunities," the minister told a Naredco event here.

Under this initiative, as many as 2,50,000 urban poor are proposed to be trained over the next three years through up-skilling and fresh trainings, catering to the needs of varied workforce in the construction sector. The key will be increased focus on hands-on training at the sites.

Courses offered under this initiative range from 80 hrs to three months with 1 hour theory and 7 hrs of practical training everyday, he said.

"Since majority of the construction workforce are generally migratory, institutional arrangements are being worked out by the ministry to facilitate their skilling at their worksites, thereby getting rid of the need of travelling back to their native state for this," Puri said.

The initiative, he said, is hoped to encourage the industry to recognise the need of the soft skills viz-a-viz hard skills in enhancing their employability.

"Association with the industry under this initiative will also ensure that curricula are further refined as per the emerging trends and industry needs," Puri added.
