Thane, May 3 (PTI) Two persons have been booked by the city police for allegedly abetting the suicide of a businessman. One of them has been arrested.

Vijay Mishra (47) and Santosh Tiwari are accused of abetting the suicide of Rajiv Charuvila (60).

While Mishra was arrested Thursday, Tiwari was still at large, said assistant commissioner of police N A Padavi.

According to the police, Mishra, resident of Bhaskar Colony here, ran an investment business.

Charuvila, who owned a tyre shop, invested Rs 11 lakh -- five lakh of his own and Rs six lakh borrowed from Tiwari -- with Mishra in 2016.

But two years later, when the investment was supposed to mature, Mishra allegedly did not pay him even the principal amount, let alone the interest thereon, police said.

On the other hand, Tiwari was allegedly asking Charuvila again and again for the promised interest of Rs 90,000 per month on the money lent by him while the latter was in no position to pay him, police said.

On April 16, 2019, Charuvila hanged himself at his shop.

Based on his wife's complaint that he ended life due to harassment by Mishra and Tiwari, police registered a case under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) and arrested Mishra Thursday. Tiwari was yet to be traced, police said.
