The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has rolled out a major overhaul of its member portal, introducing new features around claim processing, withdrawal categories and account tracking. The upgrade follows a database migration and software update that took the portal offline for several days in late June, and the rollout is continuing in phases.
Here is a look at the key changes members should be aware of while using the updated system.
Portal Back Online After Outage
The EPFO Member Portal suspended new claim submissions and processing from June 26 to June 29 to allow for backend database consolidation. Services resumed on June 30, though the organisation has said the full rollout will continue over the following weeks, with some features still being activated in stages. EPFO Upgrades Unified Member Portal: UAN Activation, Generation Through Portal Discontinued; Here’s How You Can Do It Now.
Members have been advised to expect additional claim verification for about two weeks, along with slower processing during the phased rollout. EPFO has also asked members to avoid submitting duplicate claims or repeatedly logging in, since this adds load to the system.
Simplified Withdrawal Categories
One of the biggest changes is the simplification of PF Advance, or Form 31, withdrawals. The earlier 13 separate withdrawal provisions have been merged into three broad categories: essential needs such as illness, education and marriage, housing needs for buying or repairing a home, and special circumstances such as natural calamities. EPFO Interest Update: 8.25% Annual Interest To Be Credited by July 15.
Withdrawals for education are now allowed up to 10 times and for marriage up to 5 times, an increase from the earlier combined limit of three. Partial withdrawals can be made after 12 months of service, and special circumstance claims do not require additional justification.
Automatic Eligible Claim Amount
The portal now automatically calculates and displays a member's Eligible Claim Amount before a PF Advance application is submitted, removing the need for manual calculation. For eligible partial withdrawal cases, members can generally withdraw up to 75% of their eligible balance, while at least 25% must remain in the account for retirement security, subject to final verification during claim processing.
New Member Service History Page
A new Member Service History page gives members a consolidated view of all PF accounts linked to their Universal Account Number, along with employment history and pending transfers, in a single screen instead of multiple sections.
The Member ID Delink option, used when an incorrect member ID has been linked to a UAN, has also been moved into this section, making it easier to locate and initiate a delinking request.
Other Additions
EPFO has added a Scheme Certificate Surrender service under Online Services, and introduced Passbook Lite, a simplified way to check PF balance and recent transactions. However, the EPF e-Passbook itself remains unavailable at the time of writing, with no confirmed restoration date, as it is still part of the ongoing rollout.
The changes are part of the broader EPFO 3.0 initiative, a cloud based digital platform intended to speed up service delivery for over 30 crore members, including plans for UPI based PF withdrawals that would allow eligible funds to be transferred directly to a member's bank account.
What Members Should Do
Members are advised to check their Member Service History for any missing or pending PF transfers, review the automatically calculated eligible claim amount before filing a PF Advance, and avoid filing duplicate claims while the system completes post migration verification.
