Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the spy-action sequel Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, defending the film against claims that it is "propaganda." Speaking at a recent event in Mumbai, the industry veteran dismissed the label, arguing that every filmmaker has the right to present their own perspective. While the Ranveer Singh-starrer has smashed box-office records to become the second-highest-grossing Indian film of all time, it has simultaneously faced intense scrutiny over its narrative and political undertones. ‘Dhurandhar’ Duo Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar To Reunite for New Film? Here’s When Filming Begins.

Javed Akhtar Defends 'Dhurandhar' against Propaganda Label

Addressing the media during an awards ceremony, Akhtar challenged the critics who have used the term "propaganda" to dismiss the film's success. He suggested that the word is often weaponised against stories that simply do not align with a specific viewer's personal beliefs.

"I don't know what you mean by propaganda films," Akhtar told reporters. "Every story takes some stand, but does it become propaganda because the narrative isn't suited to a section of the audience? Everyone has the right to propagate their ideas. What is wrong with propaganda films?"

Akhtar further elaborated that a filmmaker's primary duty is to present a version of the truth as they see it. He noted that even fantasy or fairy-tale stories carry underlying messages, making it nearly impossible for any creative work to be completely devoid of ideology.

Javed Akhtar's Preference for the First Instalment

Despite his robust defence of the production, Akhtar offered a nuanced take on the film’s creative direction. He praised the technical execution of Dhurandhar 2, revealing that he was so impressed by the craft that he took the step of personally contacting the director, Aditya Dhar.

"I saw Dhurandhar. It's a great film. Bahut achhi banayi hui hai (It is very well made)," he said. "I actually found the number of the director and called him to congratulate this young man."

However, when comparing the two entries in the franchise, Akhtar admitted his personal preference remained with the original. "I personally found the first installment more appealing than the sequel," he noted, while still maintaining that the second film is an "excellent" piece of work.

A Historic Run Amidst Criticism

The veteran’s support comes as Dhurandhar 2 continues a historic run at the global box office. Having released on March 19, 2026, the film has now surpassed the lifetime earnings of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, placing it second only to Dangal in the ranks of Indian cinema's global earners.

The franchise has now crossed the INR 3,000 crore mark worldwide, a first for any Indian film series.  In his closing remarks, Akhtar contextualised the shift in Bollywood's storytelling as a reflection of broader societal changes. He suggested that the evolution of cinema is tied to the evolving values of the public.

"Films are like mirrors," Akhtar concluded. "With the passage of time, morality changes and aspirations change. As society changes, content changes." ‘Pralay’: After ‘Dhurandhar 2’, Ranveer Singh To Star in Hansal Mehta-Backed Zombie Thriller? Here’s What We Know.
