Mumbai, July 3: Mumbai's monsoon spell has shown no signs of easing, with heavy rain through Thursday and Friday triggering widespread disruption across the city and its suburbs, raising fresh questions over whether schools and colleges holding weekend classes will remain open on Saturday, July 4.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad for Saturday and Sunday, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, parents and students are watching closely for any fresh directive from civic authorities in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

No School Holiday Announced For Mumbai

Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) and the Thane district administration have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in their jurisdictions on Saturday, July 4, citing the IMD's Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall.

KDMC's Education Department issued a notice on Friday declaring a holiday for all government-aided and private primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and colleges across all boards in its jurisdiction, citing the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruption due to the forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Thane District Collector Dr. Shrikant Panchal issued a separate order under the Disaster Management Act declaring a holiday for all Anganwadis, primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, both government and private, across the entire Thane district on Saturday, in view of the Red Alert issued for the district and the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall from the morning of July 4.

As of Friday evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) had not announced any holiday for educational institutions. Palghar, Panvel, Uran and Raigad had earlier declared holidays for schools and colleges this week as a precautionary measure, following the IMD's Red Alert warnings for those districts.

With the IMD forecasting extremely heavy rain continuing into the weekend, the chance of a similar closure order from the BMC or NMMC remains open. Parents in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are advised to check for updates from the BMC, individual schools and the IMD before Saturday morning.

Rainfall Intensifies Across The City

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai through Thursday and Friday, with BMC data showing the island city recorded 114 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to Friday morning, while the eastern and western suburbs logged 102 mm and 109 mm respectively. Localities including Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Worli, Charkop, Goregaon, Andheri, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Jogeshwari and parts of Navi Mumbai reported inundated roads, slowing vehicular movement and causing widespread inconvenience to commuters. Suburban rail services were also hit after an overhead wire snapped on the Harbour Line, adding to travel disruptions.

Fatalities And Rain-Related Incidents

The city's monsoon emergencies have claimed multiple lives over the past few days. A 60-year-old man, Aslam Isak Shaikh, died after falling into an open stormwater drain in Sakinaka while civic repair work was underway, prompting the BMC to suspend four officials. At least eight people were injured on Thursday afternoon after a tree collapsed on them near Raheja College in Santacruz West. Civic authorities have also responded to multiple other rain-related incidents, including short circuits and reports of structural damage across the city.

What The Forecast Says For The Weekend

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain continuing across Mumbai and its suburbs, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated places in central Maharashtra between July 3 and 5. Weather trackers have flagged July 4 as a probable peak day for the current spell, with rain intensity expected to remain high through the weekend and gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph forecast for the coast.

With forecasts pointing to continued heavy rainfall, civic agencies remain on high alert. Residents have been advised to avoid weak structures, low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas, and to stay away from trees and electric poles while awaiting official announcements on school and college operations for Saturday.
