Delhi, March 6: The police have arrested two men for the brutal murder of a 38-year-old autorickshaw driver who reportedly resisted a s*xual assault attempt. The victim, identified as Vijaypal Singh from Rajasthan's Dhaulpur, was found dead in a drain in the Saiyan police station area near the Uttar Pradesh-Rajasthan border. Following a detailed investigation involving CCTV video and call records, authorities apprehended two suspects on Monday, March 2, who have since confessed to the crime.
The incident began on the evening of February 14, when the two accused hired Singh’s autorickshaw for INR 300. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Agra West) Aditya Kumar, the men consumed alcohol inside the vehicle and allegedly forced the driver to drink as well. The situation escalated when the men attempted to s*xually assault Singh near a railway overbridge. When he fought back, the suspects assaulted him, stripped him, and held him underwater in a nearby drain until he drowned. The case surfaced after Singh’s brother filed a missing person report on February 17, leading to the identification of the body found in the drain. Four specialised police teams were formed to track the culprits. By analysing local surveillance and the victim's last known movements, police identified the suspects as Vishnu Kushwah (20) and Amit Shukla (25), both residents of the Saiyan area.
Items belonging to the victim, including his clothes and footwear, were recovered near the parked autorickshaw at the crime scene. During interrogation, the suspects admitted they had planned to be dropped off at Ladukheda bus stand but diverted the vehicle to a secluded spot to carry out the assault. Police records indicate that both Kushwah and Shukla are history-sheeters with previous criminal involvements. Vishnu Kushwah had previously served eight months in prison in connection with a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Amit Shukla also has a documented history of violent assault, having been jailed in 2020 for a similar offense.
"The accused showed a pattern of predatory behavior," stated Station Officer Gurvinder Singh. "The brutal nature of the crime, assaulting and drowning the victim for resisting, reflects their criminal record."
Vijaypal Singh is survived by his wife and two children in Rajasthan. His family has called for the strictest possible punishment for the accused, who have been booked under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The two suspects have been sent to judicial custody, and the police are preparing to move the case to a fast-track court to ensure a timely trial. Local autorickshaw unions in Agra have expressed shock over the incident, demanding better security measures for drivers operating in border areas during late-night hours.
