Patan, March 18: A shocking late-night attack in Gujarat’s Patan district has raised serious questions over law enforcement response after an armed mob vandalised a farmhouse and forced police to retreat amid heavy stone pelting.
The incident took place in Ziliya village of Chanasma taluka around 11.45 pm on March 15, when 15–20 individuals allegedly stormed a farmhouse armed with swords, sickles, sticks and stones. According to the complaint, the mob damaged the gate and boundary walls, hurled abuses, and issued threats before fleeing the scene.
Police were alerted via the 112 helpline and reached the spot, but were forced to retreat under intense stone pelting by the armed mob, effectively running back to avoid serious injury. Radhanpur DYSP Paresh Renuka said, “around six vehicles carrying armed individuals arrived and started stone pelting, damaging police vehicles,” highlighting the intensity of the attack.
The complaint was filed by livestock inspector Ronakkumar Dinubhai Desai, who said he learned about the incident over a phone call. Upon visiting the farmhouse the next morning, he found extensive damage. Police have registered two complaints and detained three individuals - Jitubha from Mudetha village, Jahubha from Vamaya village, and Dalpuji. Preliminary findings suggest the violence may be linked to a personal dispute involving Bhavesh Baldev Desai, reportedly tied to disagreements over temple fund collection.
In a significant administrative action, 13 personnel - including Police Inspector R H Solanki, Sub-Inspector Harish Arjanbhai, Head Constable Sanjaykumar Mohanlal, and five Gram Rakshak Dal members - have been suspended for alleged negligence.
Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
