New Delhi, January 15: India is celebrating Army Day 2020 to commemorate Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's taking over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian armed forces from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. On Army Day 2020, Captain Tania Sher Gill, a fourth-generation woman army officer, led an all men contingent and broke a glass ceiling. Sher Gill, who has done B Tech in electronics and communications, was commissioned in March 2017 from OTA Chennai. Her father was in 101 Medium Regiment (Artillery) while her grandfather was in the 14th Armed Regiment (Scinde Horse).

Last year, Captain Bhavna Kasturi from ASC became the first woman officer to lead an all men contingent on Republic Day. On January 15, 1949, Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
