Dispur, December 29: Police in Assam’s Morigaon district have booked a man for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl and later circulating videos of the forced sex acts on social media. The incident, which has sparked local outrage, came to light after the minor attempted to take her own life following the online leak of the video.
According to the police, the accused, identified as 21-year-old Sahidul Islam, had been harassing the victim for an extended period. The victim reported that Islam initially used the threat of an acid attack to coerce her into meeting him and performing sexual acts. The victim, distraught by the public circulation of the sensitive content, attempted to end her life by consuming a poisonous substance. She was discovered by family members and rushed to a nearby hospital, where her condition is currently reported as stable. Following the attempt, the victim’s family approached the Laharighat police station to file a formal complaint. The family alleged that the harassment had been ongoing and that the digital leak was a deliberate attempt to defame the minor after she stopped responding to the suspect’s threats.
Acting on the First Information Report (FIR), local police conducted a raid and took Islam into custody. Officials confirmed that the mobile device used to record and upload the content has been seized for forensic examination.
The accused faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additionally, charges under the Information Technology Act have been filed regarding the non-consensual distribution of sexually explicit material.
