A fatal mudslide occurred at an underpass construction site near the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) bridge on Tuesday, killing one worker and leaving another trapped under deep soil and debris. Emergency response teams, along with local police and fire department personnel, were immediately dispatched to the site, where active rescue operations are ongoing to locate and pull out the trapped worker.
The mishap occurred around 11:00 AM while daily wage labourers were carrying out excavation and structural work for the BDA-managed underpass project. A total of five labourers were working inside the excavation pit at the time of the collapse. According to preliminary reports, loose earth and mud along the wall of the trench gave way unexpectedly. Three of the five workers managed to escape to safety as the soil caved in. However, two labourers were caught directly underneath the falling mass of earth. One labourer was recovered from the debris but was subsequently pronounced dead. Emergency teams are continuing intensive operations to reach the second worker, identified as 31-year-old Sonal Parim, who remains trapped beneath the collapsed dirt. Rescuers are using heavy earth-moving equipment alongside manual digging tools to carefully clear earth without causing further soil displacement. Paramedical teams and ambulances remain stationed on standby at the location.
"Rescue operations were initiated immediately upon receiving the emergency call. Priority is centered on clearing the debris safely to locate the trapped worker," stated a senior official monitoring the site. Preliminary inquiries suggest recent water accumulation in the excavated pit and loosened soil structure may have contributed to the sudden collapse. Local authorities have initiated an investigation into whether adequate shoring, side-wall reinforcements, and safety protocols were in place at the BDA construction zone. Further details regarding the victim's identity and the official cause of the cave-in will be released upon completion of preliminary site inspections by civic engineers and law enforcement.
