The altercation began around 2:00 a.m. when the woman questioned Kalaiselvan and his friend, Balaji, about the act. According to police reports, both men were in an inebriated state and engaged in a heated verbal spat with the woman. The situation escalated rapidly as several people in the vicinity intervened to defend the pedestrian. The crowd eventually turned into a mob, assaulting both men until Kalaiselvan lost consciousness. Balaji sustained serious injuries during the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Following the assault, Kalaiselvan’s brother, Kalaivanan, was informed of the situation and rushed to the spot. He transported his brother to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in an auto-rickshaw, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The preliminary medical examination suggests the cause of death was severe internal trauma resulting from the physical assault. Chennai Shocker: Traffic Policeman, Boy, and His Mother Arrested Under POCSO Act for Sexually Assaulting 13-Year-Old Girl.

Kalaivanan has publicly accused the local police of negligence, stating that the incident occurred in close proximity to the Esplanade police station. He alleged that officers present at the scene failed to intervene or even call for an ambulance, forcing the family to arrange private transport for the critically injured man.

The Esplanade police have formally registered a case of murder and are currently conducting an extensive investigation into the lynching. To identify the members of the mob, authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from several high-definition CCTV cameras located along Prakasam Salai and Broadway.
